25/05/15 - Zone Conference‏

Good afternoon,

We went to Zone Conference on Thursday and it was really good! I
finally gave my first gap in zone conference with Elder Tomás. A gap
is a 2 minute teaching scenario on a principle from the missionary
lessons. The night before I told Elder Tomás that we need to do our
gaps because we'll probably get chosen to do it (I was right!).

The trainings we received that day were helpful. Sister Jordan
explained to us the importance of the spirit in teaching. D&C 50:17-24
tells us that teaching with the spirit is God's way of teaching. She
told us that with the spirit, teaching the lessons won't be the same
every time and that we shouldn't do things by rote presentation.

17 Verily I say unto you, he that is ordained of me and sent forth to
preach the word of truth by the Comforter, in the Spirit of truth,
doth he preach it by the Spirit of truth or some other way?

18 And if it be by some other way it is not of God.

19 And again, he that receiveth the word of truth, doth he receive it
by the Spirit of truth or some other way?

20 If it be some other way it is not of God.

21 Therefore, why is it that ye cannot understand and know, that he
that receiveth the word by the Spirit of truth receiveth it as it is
preached by the Spirit of truth?

22 Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one
another, and both are edified and rejoice together.

23 And that which doth not edify is not of God, and is darkness.

24 That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and
continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth
brighter and brighter until the perfect day.

The assistants taught us about doing "How to Begin Teaching" which is
something that I want to improve on. Using the HTBT points in Preach
My Gospel to build the foundation of teaching and helping the
investigator to understand - keeping commitments, attending church and
baptism during the first meeting. I know that this is so important in
helping investigators to progress, which is something we really need
at the moment.

Yesterday it was my first time in Rothwell and we went to the old
Church of England which has a bone crypt! The people there were nice
and showed us around, but had an interesting look on their faces when
they saw our badges :) Being a missionary has strengthened my
testimony of the reality of the great apostasy (did you know that
Jesus Christ isn't mentioned in the Old Testament?).

Elder Chew

Here is a personal update on his back issues, thanks for those who is praying for him:

My back still aches, but the physiotherapist has told me to do a few exercises each day. She wants me to rock my head side to side 10 times, look left to right 10 times and twisting my upper body 10 times. Then I should use a hot water bottle for my back for 10 minutes. She said that walking everywhere with my shoulder bag is the cause of the aching. The condition I have is postal facet dysfunction. She will be giving me 4 treatments and she seems confident that she can fix it. Most of her clients have the same issue as me. I have adjusted the strap on my bag so it's closer to me which seems to be helping a bit.

18/05/15 - I'm getting darker!‏

Good afternoon,

Last week was pretty good! We did a lot of finding and managed to get some new investigators. We just need to make sure we contact all of them. I've recently noticed that I'm getting more of a tan with all the sunshine (there's not much today, only drizzle). There are lines where I've been wearing my glasses!

One of our new investigators is James and he used to come to our church when it was in Corby (20 minutes away from Kettering). This was a long time ago with his mum. He never got baptised in our church, but eventually got baptised in the Baptist church. We spoke to him about eternal families and he believes in it. We will be seeing him next week. James and his family owns 2 Lightning Mcqueens! He uses them for charity events to help kids (see the pictures). He even let Elder Tomás sit inside.

This Thursday we are going to have our zone conference in London. I think it might be our last zone conference with President and Sister Jordan so we have been asked to write them a T book entry. I'm sad that they have to go, but I'm sure that President and Sister Stevens will be just as good. I'm grateful that I've had this time to get to know them and to know the love they have for all of us. Let me know if there's any good messages we could share from the gospel library.

11/05/15 - Mother's Day Skype Call‏

Good afternoon,

Thanks for Skyping with me! It was really nice seeing all of you
including Bob and Vinnie the guinea pigs! My first few days in
Kettering have been exciting. We live in the city centre so almost all
the time it's busy (it reminds me of Chelmsford). However, finding in
the city centre hasn't been too effective lately. My back and neck
have been aching more than usual since I've been here and I should be
seeing a physio to see what should be done. I'm missing the car
already :(

Me and Elder Tomás have seen the Lord working with us. We prayed for
someone who is prepared before we left the flat and as soon as we
stepped outside we saw an African lady who was struggling with her
bags. We immediately went over to offer assistance and she said "yes,
God bless you". She bought a lot of things to prepare for her friend's
son's first birthday. It turned out that she had been taught by
previous missionaries and is happy to have us come back again. She
wanted us to say a prayer for the baby, so we all held each other's
hands in a circle and I said a prayer. They were happy and grateful
that we could help them. I know the Lord answers prayers, sometimes it
isn't as quick, but he always listens and answers.

05/05/15 - We actually got ipads + move calls!‏

Hey everyone!

Last Tuesday we had a mission conference at Hyde Park Chapel and it was really good (we even got lunch)! The general authorities spoke a lot about using agency and repenting to prepare us for using ipads. They told us that someone asked the first presidency about why they would let young missionaries use ipads when there is temptation to misuse it. They said "we trust them". It made me think about how much the Lord trusts us to use these mobile devices to become more efficient missionaries. This is a trust I want to live worthy of. Spencer W Kimball in his talk "When the World Will Be Converted" says:

"I believe that the Lord is anxious to put into our hands inventions of which we laymen have hardly had a glimpse.

The Prophet Joseph Smith declared: “The truth of God will go forth boldly, till it has penetrated every continent, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished.”

The talk was in 1974 and now we are one of the first missions in Europe to use ipads. As missionaries we will be able to reach more people than we ever have using this technology. Now that we have ipads we are thinking of new ways to find people with them. Me and Elder Coon have used them a few times to share messages with families and it's proven to be very useful.

Yesterday I got the call from President Jordan that I will be leaving Bletchley to go to Kettering which is about an hour drive north. I will still be in the Northampton zone. Elder Coon will be follow up trained by Elder Kopischke who just lives 5 minutes from us! I will be follow up training Elder Tomas from Spain in my first 4 man flat. Elder Crawley (one of my MTC companions) will be there with us as the new district leader! I'm excited to go to a new place, but a little sad to leave Bletchley. It has been my home for the past 6 months, but I know it's in good hands. Let me know if you have any good ideas on sharing the gospel using ipads and social media.
