Elder Chew is home!

Mother and Son reunion
We went to the England London Mission to pick up Elder Chew and also to meet up with Jesse my step son, who had served in the same mission 3 years prior. It was a spirit-filled and very touching evening, with lots of tears. President and Sister Stevens and Elder and sister Williams were very attentive, kind and loving to all the missionaries and 5 families who were there picking up their sons and daughter.
First time we have seen him in almost 2 years!
RMs and one future missionary (Justin)
Saying good bye to the cars he had driven.

Very close is having to make 2 trips.
Elder Williams who keeps all the Missionaries in line.
Sister Williams - another mother to all the missioaries
A Lovely rendition of Army of Helamans by the missionaries who were transferred out on the 26th July. A little note: I got to meet Sister Lund from Hong Kong whose dad had served as a missionary in Ipoh, Malaysia...my father's hometown.

11/07/16 - Last Zone Meeting

Hey!

Last week was pretty rough, it seems like we're starting over with our
teaching pool. Elder Dalley and I were thinking about what we could do
to find better people. We decided we will do a water fast every other
day this week! We put our trust in the Lord that he will help us find
a new family and help us with our health.

I had my last zone meeting which was a little sad, but we received
good trainings about attacking the morning and talking to others
without using "Mormon language" so they can really understand what
we're saying.

We did a zone study today about the parable of the lost sheep in Luke
15. The Saviour left the 99 to find the one lost sheep. He rejoiced
when he found it. We talked about this as a zone and discussed that no
matter how busy life can get we should always have time to help those
who have lost their way. It is one of the greatest feelings to help
someone find truth and understanding by teaching them simple gospel
principles.

P-day last week was fun in Lavenham! I will attach some pictures. We
saw the house that Harry Potter was born in!

P.s. The Meet the Mormons movie is on the gospel library!

04/07/16 - Happy 4th of July!

Hi!

Hope you're enjoying the 4th of July. Apparently America is 240 yrs old! I'll have to go back and visit one day. Our fast and testimony meeting was good and our investigator M. came with the Butcher family. She is staying with them for another week and a half before she goes back to Spain. We taught her yesterday at Bishop's home. She is open to reading and praying to know if the Book of Mormon is true. We hope that when she goes back to Spain her family will support the choices she wants to make. She wasn't sure what they would say about her getting baptised when she is already Orthodox.

We are going to see Lavenham today with the district, apparently it's a really old village that has been well preserved! This week we will be teaching someone new! His name is D. and we found him when he was jogging. He looks interested in the Book of Mormon and he seems so humble. We are excited for him to work towards a baptismal date and he said some of his family should be there too!

27/06/16 - Hydroplaning

Last week was very rainy, but we have seen blessings from the Lord it
may not have been from driving through puddles though (there are so
many here...)We are currently teaching an American family that
referred themselves online. The mum has a close friend that is Mormon
and the father knows a lot of Mormons in the military. They are
baptist and have so many deep questions. They just don't like digging
at the surface of things. They are making plans to come to church with
us this Sunday and it will be the first time for the husband. We feel
very confident they will get the answers they need.

We went tracting for a few hours and were struggling to find someone
to teach. We had the Cambridge Elders pray for us over the phone and
we found Gemma, a mum with 4 kids! We were happy to feel the spirit
that as others pray for us it helps to build the faith to find those
who will listen.

14/06/16 - Moved again to Bury St. Edmonds?!?!

Afternoon everyone,

We had move calls yesterday and President said I have a new assignment to go to Bury St. Edmonds (Ipswich stake) to be with Elder Dalley. I was pretty surprised as I thought I would be staying as I've only been in St. Albans for 5 weeks! Elder Silva my last companion will be replacing me here.

St. Albans is a wonderful place and recently we found a few new investigators to start teaching. I'm sure Elder Silva will do well finding Spanish and Portuguese people to teach too. We went to the London Temple last week, because Elder Alvey will be going home this week. It was truly amazing! It has almost been 2 years since I went to the temple so we were learning a lot. We participated in initiatories, endowments and sealings for the whole day. I'm so thankful that we have these truths restored to us. The temple is one of the best places to build your testimony of Jesus Christ and his gospel.

30/05/16 - Harlow stake blitz

Hi!

Last week went very quickly! We went to London for our exchange and we
visited the Borough market! It was very busy and there was so much
food (look at the picture of the fruit and veg).

On Saturday the whole zone (7 companionships) went to Harlow to join
in with the members in doing missionary work. The Stake is doing a
one-on-one program to help boost the missionary efforts in each area.
All the missionaries were on splits with the Harlow ward and with
members of the stake presidency and high council. There was a strong
spirit there and a lot of good work was done. We feel that it really
helped the members to get more excited about missionary service.
Harlow received many new referrals and we're optimistic about their
week.

Elder Poole and I have been exhausted lately. We have seen that the
Lord is blessing us with more people to teach. One of them is Sean,
he's a brother of one of the sisters in the ward. He has lost a lot
and has a strong desire to change! He is doing very well and has cut
down his smoking from 20 to 4 a day! It is amazing to see what a truly
humble heart with real intent can do. We will be praying for more
people like this to teach.

Transfer to St. Albans

Hi,

We have been so busy over the past couple days with moving flats. Our new flat is looking very nice and we told each other how terrible it would be if one of us had to move... It turns out that will be me! We got the call from President Stevens and I will be going to St. Albans to be with Elder Poole. He's a missionary from my MTC group, but he went to the Provo MTC.

I was quite surprised because I thought I would get to stay here in Basildon longer this time. I'm really grateful that I had the time to see the ward again and to see the wonderful baptisms that took place. In last Sunday's sacrament meeting the spirit was strong. The stake presidency was there and we received new changes in the ward. They rearrange the Young Women's presidency and the bishopric. Bishop Nicholl's got released from being Bishop after 6 and a half years. The new Bishop is Bishop Bascom he was the gospel principle's teacher. Bishop Bascom's family is from Utah and seeing him get called was an emotional time (he was my first guess for being Bishop). I know he will do a great job at helping and loving the ward.

We are going to have a chapel tour soon and then I will need to continue packing everything for tomorrow!

25/04/16 - Summar's baptism

Hi friends and family,

Yesterday we witnessed the baptism of Summar! She's one of the primary
kids in the ward which turned out to be a convert baptism 😀. We are
grateful to see these families being blessed through baptism. Romford
stake is doing really well with 8 baptisms so far for the month of
April.

We were in Southend finding with the Elders. It started hailing all of
a sudden, but me and Elder Nelson kept going. We spoke to a very
friendly Spanish girl, but she didn't want to commit to anything. We
continued trying to stop people and then we found a family from Haiti!
His best friend is a Mormon and he's willing to meet up. He will be
away for a week, but they will be contacting him soon.

I know the Lord is always wanting to bless us and we just need to keep
trusting him and praying a lot!

04/04/16 - Back to Bas Vegas‏

Good afternoon,

I hope everyone enjoyed watching general conference. There was a lot of spiritual food given to us to digest. I feel that it has given me a boost to stay motivated and to fulfill my priesthood duties. Sometimes I forget about how much God trusts us with the power he uses to create worlds without number!

In Basildon we are going to be baptising a Portuguese family of 3 this week and we're teaching a young lady from South Africa who will get baptised towards the end of April. There's a lot of good things happening here and I know there's a reason the Lord wants me back here. I feel there are some people that I need to find and begin teaching in this area. It was nice for me to see Rosa and Jose again! They're the Mexican couple that got baptised the week I left Basildon a few months ago. They make the best food!

I'm excited for this new transfer and to see the ward again on Sunday! Choose the harder right, than the easier wrong! #PresidentMonson

29/03/16 - Transfers week‏

Hi,

Elder Alvey and I were blessed to see the baptisms for Saviours and Hua a couple weeks ago in the Norwich. It has been an amazing time teaching them, the sisters mainly taught Hua in Mandarin.  I know that it was a miracle that we saw her again at the Chinese New Year party. She is a close friend of some of our recent-converts who invited them to the party.  Now her husband is becoming more interested in the church!

Saviours was a self-referral, because he was talking to his friend in Canada who's a member and he wanted to check out the LDS church. He has the most sincere heart of anyone that I have taught. He asks really good questions and has grown in his faith. Seeing Saviours and Hua grow in the gospel has brought me so much joy. It really does build your testimony of the restored gospel that it works wonderfully!  Working with referrals it the best way to do missionary work. I'm a little sad that I have to leave Norwich to go back to Basildon, but I know that there are people I need to speak to down there.

Hope you have had a good Easter holiday and invite your friends to watch general conference :)

22/02/16 - The Word of wisdom.‏

Good evening,

We had a good day yesterday. Saviours and Hua came to church! Saviours was a media referral we got a couple weeks back and he's amazing! He's from Gambia and has so much real intent to understand and act on the gospel. At church a couple weeks back we introduced him to different members and brought different members teaching with us. The fellowship has been great. When he came to church he was greeted by a lot of people, especially those that came out teaching with us. They even committed him to come back this Sunday and got excited about his baptismal date in March. We taught Saviours the Word of Wisdom and he couldn't understand why we don't drink tea and coffee. We explained that it's a commandment of God and about obedience to the commandments. After explaining that it can effect the way we control our bodies + bearing testimony, he now understands and will keep the Word of Wisdom!

We are passing Hua over to the Norwich Sisters, because Sister Chou can help her understand better in Mandarin. Even though we're losing someone from our teaching pool we are excited for this week because we know the Lord has been helping us find good people to teach. We will be having a super MLC meeting in London on Wednesday with all the district leaders, zone leaders, sister training leaders and assistants.

Here's Elder Alvey from Bountiful, Utah! I guess it's about time I get
someone from Utah.

16/02/16 - Transfer Week

Transfer news this time has been pretty surprising! A lot of things are changing in the zone. My companion Elder Vianna Da Silva is going to the City ward in the Hyde park zone. This is a Portuguese speaking ward and he will be the district leader there. I will be getting Elder Alvey from... Utah!

I can't remember if I mentioned this before but, we had our Chinese New Year Party a couple weeks ago and a lot of good things happened. A lot of the Chinese recent-converts were there to help cook/eat the food and they brought some of their friends. A mum named Hua came because she was invited by Annie one of our recent-converts. We were heading back to the chapel for the party and we stopped her just outside the chapel. Once we made contact we immediately recognised each other. We invited her to the party and then we realised that she was already invited. It turns out that during my 1st or 2nd week in Norwich I stopped her family in the city centre and showed the Christmas video to her. She enjoyed it, but we lost contact with her for many weeks. She enjoyed the party and she came to sacrament meeting for the first time last week. She stayed afterwards for the Norwich sister's baptism too! She doesn't really have any religious background, but she is so humble and has been feeling the spirit through prayer. I'm very grateful that the Lord is mindful of everyone we talk to and wants to help them to find the truth.

1/02/16 Norwich Ward Conference

Hey!

Last Sunday we had our ward conference. Me and Elder Vianna sang in the choir. Elder Vianna will forever be praised by the Norwich ward because he did a solo... They mentioned the Europe Area Plan -"Bring us to Him" and apparently Elder Ballard mentioned that it's the best area plan he's seen, because of it's simplicity! He said that Satan is the master of complexity and the Lord is the master of simplicity. Sometimes it seems that we can make the gospel very complex and can lose the focus of things. We have been sharing the Europe Area Plan and helping the members to create their own plans for the following 3: "Bring a friend", "Becoming spiritually and temporally self-reliant", "Find an ancestor". We're hoping that as we work along side the members in this plan we will be able to see the gospel in action to help with retention, reactivation and conversion.

The work is okay, but it can be a lot better. Some of the people we planned to come to church didn't go for family/work issues. Our stake president talked about observing the Sabbath day. The way we keep the Sabbath day holy is our sign to Heavenly Father and shows our relationship to the Savior. This is something I want to teach more when we speak with our non-member friends about church attendance.

We went finding in the city centre during the afternoon on Saturday and it was very busy. It was hard for us to have a good conversation with the people rushing around. I tried to follow the spirit and I stopped a family in the middle of the crowd. They seemed nice and it turns out that the mum used to go to church, she's less-active and her husband isn't a member. We felt excited that we were able to find this family and take it as a sign that we should work more with the part-member families in the ward. I know the Savior will help to put people in our path that we can be friends with and show them our example of true discipleship. “Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.” (President Uchtdorf) Have an amazing week!

Worldwide missionary training

Afternoon everyone,

Everything is going pretty well so far. Our teaching pool is getting better and we seem to be teaching and finding more Portuguese speakers! Church was good last Sunday. Our friend N.
came to church and he's been reading the Book of Mormon and listening to it in the car. He said he can relate to the different situations and experiences. He was brought to church by one of the members, but he lives in Basildon so the missionaries there will be teaching him soon. He said he is considering baptism!

Last week we had the worldwide missionary broadcast. It was titled "Teach Repentance and Baptise Converts". The trainings were on the fundamentals of missionary work. Some of the things that stood out to me was to bear testimony of Jesus Christ and his Atonement at all times and in all places. If we don't know what to say we should talk about him. We learnt about visiting less-actives and part-member families. President Clayton said that they're a gold mine. They reminded us about how to ask for referrals by using specific questions such as "who has recently moved into the neighbourhood"? Or "Who do you know that's going through a difficult time?". Elder Bednar gave a good training on the role of the Holy Ghost in conversion. He spoke that we need to help our friends to identify the Holy Ghost in their lives. This is something I really want to focus on, because the spirit will make all the difference in our teaching and I want to create the teaching environment where the spirit can testify. I know that the Holy Ghost can change hearts if we are worthy and will help to bring true conversion.

Love,

Elder Chew
